For hopeful parents who are unable to conceive naturally, infertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be a viable option for starting a family. During this process, eggs are fertilized outside of the womb, then transferred into the uterus where implantation will hopefully take place. Many factors can influence the outcome of an IVF cycle, and some prospective parents may need to undergo more than one cycle. Here are some tips that may help maximize your odds of success.

Do:

Discuss lifestyle habits with your doctor.

For many couples, in vitro fertilization is unfamiliar territory. You should therefore ask your doctor about how your lifestyle habits, such as working out or drinking, could impact your odds of pregnancy. For example, your doctor may recommend avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption even before you go for an embryo transfer to potentially boost egg quality.

Try to have a laugh after transfer.

The time frame between the embryo transfer and the pregnancy test to determine whether the treatment worked—often two weeks—can be emotionally challenging for hopeful parents. However, swapping out stressors for laughs may have positive effects. In one study, women who were entertained by a clown post-transfer were more likely to become pregnant.

Don’t:

Overlook possible herbal interactions.

While not technically considered medications, these supplements are not studied as thoroughly as prescription or over-the-counter drugs, so potential interactions are largely unknown. Chances are your doctor may recommend erring on the side of caution and skipping any supplements as you prepare for and undergo IVF.

Put your life on hold.

Some women experience mild cramping after transfer, but you certainly don’t need to put your life on hold. Your doctor may advise you to act as if you’re pregnant, which may mean avoiding alcohol, smoking, and any other potentially dangerous substances. However, there’s no need for bed rest. Going about your regular routine will support healthy circulation.
