Now that spring is here, you’ll be relying on your vacuum cleaner even more to remove allergens and contaminants from around your home. But to ensure it can keep up, it’s important to properly clean it on a regular basis. Below are a few tips that can help you clean your appliance.

How to Clean Your Vacuum

1. Remove & Clean the Cannister

Always unplug the vacuum cleaner before removing the bag or canister. If it’s more than two thirds full, it’s time to empty and clean. Dump the debris into the trash and then use a microfiber cloth to wipe the interior. Wash it with warm soapy water and allow it to dry before inserting it back into the vacuum.

2. Clean the Brush Roll

vacuumThe brush roll is located at the bottom of the vacuum and must be cleaned to prevent the build-up of caught debris. Remove the roll and use your fingers or a pair of scissors to remove any trapped hair or string. Wipe down the base plate of the vacuum with a microfiber cloth to loosen and remove dirt and debris.

3. Replace the Filter

Some of the latest models of vacuum cleaners are equipped with filters to trap dust and other particles. If the filter is washable, clean out any build-up and rinse it with warm soapy water. Allow it to dry before re-attaching it to the vacuum. Some filters must be replaced when they are dirty.
