A nutritious diet is imperative to overall health, with some foods exceptionally healthy for the eyes. Local optometrist Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates of Aiea, HI always strives to help patients maintain eye health outside of his office and regularly recommends certain superfoods they can enjoy for optimal eyesight and well-being.

Check out his best recommendations regarding superfoods for the eyes:

  • Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, and collard greens are all excellent for eye health, as they contain high amounts lutein, a carotenoid compound that prevents damage to cells. A diet rich in spinach, for example, protects the macula, or the center of the retina, from cellular damage. Such damage can result in cataracts and macular degeneration.

  • Salmon: A fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids, salmon and other cold-water fish improve back-of-the-eye health. Omega-3 focuses on retinas to prevent plaque formation, which contributes to macular degeneration. They help prevent dry eyes as well.
  • Berries: Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and cherries are ideal for cardiovascular and eye health. Berries lower inflammation and blood pressure, with high blood pressure contributing to macular degeneration. Blue and blackberries are rich in anthocyanins, which feature dark purple pigments that prevent arterial blockages. This allows the arteries to provide retinas with oxygen.

  • Broccoli: The green vegetable stimulates anti-inflammatory systems in the body that lower inflammation in the back of the eye.

Other eye superfoods recommended by Aiea’s favorite eye doctor include walnuts, soy, and orange bell peppers. Find your favorites at Aiea natural health food stores such as Good Health Food Store and Down to Earth Organic & Natural.
