What Materials Might Contain Asbestos?, West New York, New Jersey

Asbestos is a group of minerals that exist in soil and rocks. When the carcinogens are released into the air, they can create health risks, potentially causing chronic lung diseases and cancers. It’s important to know what materials in your home have the mineral and may need asbestos abatement. Here are four components that may be in your home.

These 4 Materials May Contain Asbestos

1. Insulation

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, asbestos fibers can be found in vermiculite, a material used in home insulation up until the 1990s. Many homes built predominantly in the 1950s and 1960s may contain the harmful mineral in their insulation, so it’s recommended to schedule asbestos abatement immediately. The ATSDR also features a list of high-risk areas where builders frequently used this mineral, including caulking and textured paints.

2. Cosmetics

asbestos abatementMany powdered makeup products are made with talc, a mineral that is often mined at the same time as asbestos. Cosmetics manufacturers must be particular when selecting mines to ensure their products won’t contain asbestos. However, due to a lack of regulation, some makeup products with traces of asbestos are for sale on store shelves. It’s best to purchase talc-free products to ensure that your makeup is free of harmful substances.

3. Roofing

Some roofing materials such as shingles may contain asbestos. The carcinogen can be in the base flashing, single ply membrane systems, asphalt roof shingles, roof coatings, and even the felt that is used underneath the shingles.

4. Vinyl Flooring

Many older homes feature vinyl flooring, a tile that offers easy maintenance and durability. If your home features a vinyl floor that was installed before 1990, you may want to have an asbestos abatement team inspect it. At this time, many manufacturers used asbestos to increase the durability of the material.
