When planning a kitchen remodeling project, there are steps to take before the process begins to ensure a smooth workflow. You’ll work closely with your contractor before the renovation to create a detailed strategy to achieve the new look of your kitchen. If you are preparing for a kitchen remodeling project, here are a few tasks to add to your to-do list before starting the makeover.

What Tasks Should You Complete Before a Remodeling Project?

1. Evaluate & Set a Budget

It can be easy to get carried away with the designs and elements of your plan. Establish a budget early on, so you can create the foundation of the project with the fixtures and appliances in your price range. Remember to add an extra 10–20% to your original budget to allow some wiggle room for any surprises that might pop up.

2. Prepare an Alternate Space

Have a special space like a basement or office where you can tackle any food-prepping tasks, keep a small fridge, and have all of your essentials. Make room for a slow cooker or toaster oven to make quick and easy meals, while using disposable utensils and dishes to avoid a full sink.

3. Find Storage Space

Remodeling can stir up a lot of dust and other debris, so it’s a good idea to store any appliances and other fixtures to avoid an unnecessary mess. If you have a garage, you can easily move large furniture or appliances into it, but consider renting out a storage unit if you are worried about nature’s elements damaging your items. Speak with your contractor about the amount of time needed to complete the job and incorporate a unit into your budget if needed.
