After a long, cold winter, the first thaw of spring is usually a welcome sight. However, warm weather doesn’t always come at once, with temperatures often dropping back below freezing at night or on colder days. When this happens, the cycle of thawing and freezing water in the soil can cause subtle earth movements that can damage foundations, sewer lines, and septic installations. Here’s a guide to all you need to know about the effect of the Alaskan thaw on your underground systems.

The Effect of Freezing/Thawing Cycles on the Ground

septic installationsWater expands as it freezes, forcing the soil around pipes and cement footings upwards. Then, as temperatures start to rise, the soil collapses back to its original position.

While sewer lines and septic tanks are typically built to withstand the pressure of expanding groundwater, the movement of the earth itself can dislodge sewer lines and septic components, requiring new septic installation. Sagging soil can cause even new pipes to crack, and may result in sudden failure of a system that’s older or has previously suffered damage.

How Much Will This Affect My System?

How much the freeze/thaw cycle affects your sewer lines and septic systems depends on how saturated with water your soil is. A sudden freeze after heavy rainfall will cause more soil movement than a cold snap during a regular thaw. Pipes that are already cracked release extra water and saturate the soil around the breach, increasing the movement of the earth during the next freeze and the likelihood that your line will break entirely. If you have a cracked pipe, get it fixed to prevent the need for new septic installation.
