Step 1: Safety is Priority

  • Stop as close to the crash as you can and turn your vehicle off. If able to, make sure everyone is safe by checking on people who were in your vehicle and anyone else in the collision.
  • Does anyone need medical attention? Unless urgent danger, do not remove injured people.
  • Call 911 and report the collision as best as you can
  • Wait for the police to arrive and do not leave
  • Do not admit fault even if you think you’re wrong. The other party may be at fault according to the law

Step 2: Cooperate with Police

  • The police are trained to handle all details of a accident. Tell the officers how the accident happened and try to fully describe the events that led up to the crash. Always read what the police documented when the opportunity is given

Step 3: Record Information

  • Document as much as possible about the accident and the other driver(s) such as name, address, drivers license number, and plate number
  • Car make, model, and year
  • Where and when the accident happened
  • Insurance company name
  • Witnesses
  • Name of registered owner of car if not driver
  • Any statements the other driver makes such as “I’m sorry” or “I didn’t see you”

Step 4: Notify Insurance Company

  • Inform them of any injuries to you or your passengers. Remember that many times pain from these injuries may not happen for several hours or days after a collision. Keep it simple even if your insurance company wants other information since you are not an expert in these situations.
