As you revel in another day surrounded by Hawaii’s majestic beauty, indulge in a tropical cocktail. Plenty of mixed drinks add flavor and fun to an island experience. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, sample any of these drinks to delight your taste buds.

4 Tropical Cocktails to Try in Hawaii

1. Piña Colada

You don’t have to like getting caught in the rain to enjoy this rum-based cocktail. Created in 1954 by bartender Ramon “Monchito” Marrero at the Beachcombers bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the piña colada features pineapple juice and cream of coconut in addition to rum. It took Marrero three months to perfect the concoction, which he served until his retirement in 1989. Today’s piña coladas are frequently made in blenders with crushed ice to create frothy goodness.

2. Sea Breeze

cocktailsThis pink drink gets its hue from blending cranberry and grapefruit juices. A simple cocktail with vodka as the only additional ingredient, the Sea Breeze first appeared on bars at the end of the 1920s. It was originally made with grenadine and gin, and went through several other incarnations before cranberry juice was used. The drink has enjoyed popularity since the 1970s along with similar drinks like the Bay Breeze.

3. Frozen Margarita

Tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur over ice and garnished with lime and salt make up the original margarita, which like the piña colada has become a popular frozen concoction. While this tropical cocktail has several origin stories, the most popular version tells of Carlos "Danny" Herrera creating the drink at his Rancho La Gloria bar in Tijuana in 1938. Herrera supposedly made the drink for actress Marjorie King, who was allergic to all alcohol except tequila.

4. Mai Tai

Another pink drink consisting of rum, lime juice, Curaçao liqueur, and orgeat syrup, the Mai Tai’s origins supposedly begin in 1944. Tiki bar owner Victor “Trader Vic” Jules Bergeron is the reported inventor of the cocktail. He and Donn Beach of Donn the Beachcomber are credited with inventing tiki culture.
