Your tires face many threats out on the road. The heat of the summer sun, sharp objects on the asphalt, and general wear will all shorten their life span and impact your safety while driving. All drivers should be proactive about maintaining their new tires to help them last as long as possible.

Maintenance Guide for Tires

1. Prevent Dry Rot

If there are long periods where you do not drive your car, it may be susceptible to dry rot. Driving keeps the rubber fresh, so try to take it out at least once a month. If you need to put your car in storage for longer than that, then remove the tires completely and place the vehicle on blocks to prevent flat spots from the weight.  Place a cover over them to protect them from dirt.

2. Clean Them

tiresDirt and harsh corrosives such as road salt will accumulate on your tires and break down the rubber prematurely. Begin by rinsing your wheels and rims off with a hose. Use a pressure washer if necessary to remove the larger chunks of dirt. Fill a bucket with water and some dish soap, then rub the wheel down with the solution on a wash mitt to remove any remaining grease. Focus on the areas between the spokes and along the rubber sidewall.

3. Apply a Protectant

A protectant creates a thin and flexible barrier that stands between the rubber and outside threats like UV light and corrosive materials. After cleaning your tire, coat it with a protectant. Reapply every one or two months for the best protection.
