Between the high winds, falling debris, and ice buildup, winter weather is tough on your gutters. To ensure it’s ready for spring showers, check your system for any damage and handle repairs now. Follow the checklist below to ensure you find all potential issues with your system.

Gutter Inspection Checklist

1. Look for Debris

Even if you cleaned out your gutters last autumn, they have accumulated debris that needs to be removed to allow for drainage. Grab some gloves, a ladder, and a gardening trowel. Use the trowel to push the debris into larger piles then pull all the debris out. Don’t forget to check the downspouts, as larger debris can get caught in the corners of these.

2. Check the Slope

guttersIf the gutters were loosened by impact or the weight of ice and debris, the slope of it will be affected. This will prevent all the water from draining out properly, leaving standing water that spills down the side of your house. The water may damage your siding or foundation, and it can attract pests. Shake the gutters gently, and look for any pooling water or pieces that are loose. If you find any, they will need to be repaired.

3. Test Drainage

When it comes down to it, all you want is for your drainage system to direct water away from your house. Pour water into various areas of your gutter system and watch where it goes; all of it should be directed through the downspouts and drain away from the building. Look for leaks in the gutters, downspouts that don’t have an elbow joint directing away from the house, or pools of water near the foundation.
