A Taste of Skagway at Jewell Gardens

You’ll be inspired by your visit to the famous Jewell Gardens to explore the grounds and taste some of their wonderful garden recipes along with Alaskan wines. Stroll through this unique northern show garden as your knowledgeable guide shows you the unusual varieties of plants grown in Alaska. You will be harvesting items from the garden to use in the kitchen. After touring the garden, it’s onto a cooking demonstration using fresh, organic ingredients in the kitchen. Sip some wine as you discover just how easy it is to cook straight from the garden — the chef demonstrates recipes for fresh herb scones, a rhubarb treat and a seasonal soup. Taste whatever is made and learn how to add color and flavor with edible flowers.

Kodiak Sightseeing & Russian Tea

Head down Cannery Row to learn about the fishing industry in Kodiak with an introduction to this quaint, working Alaska city. You’ll visit the Russian Orthodox Church where the priest or a member of the clergy will talk about the Russian church and the historic role it has played in Alaska. Step inside the Art Gallery to view the work of artists from Kodiak and from throughout the state of Alaska. At the Fisherman’s Church, the Balalaika Players, a local band, perform traditional Russian music. As you listen to their music, enjoy Russian tea and treats such as borsch, Russian tea cakes and piroshkis. Your tour will end with a scenic drive past the largest Coast Guard base in the United States, with a stop to view an eagle’s nest or a salmon run.

Birds, Bears & Barnacles

This is your guaranteed opportunity to view up close Alaska’s majestic bald eagles, Alaskan coastal brown bears and ocean sea life from aquariums, touch tanks and a salmon hatchery. Departing the pier, you will drive to the Alaska Raptor Center where you will spend time learning about the many birds of prey in the Flight Center and outside bird habitats. Next, you will drive along a very scenic portion of the Sitka road system, stopping at the Fortress of the Bear. Learn about the life and habits of the Alaska coastal brown bear and climb an elevated platform offering views of brown bears. Leaving the fortress, head to the Sitka Marine Science Center which houses an active salmon hatchery, saltwater aquariums and live fish touch tanks displaying many of the marine species found in Sitka’s ocean waters.
