Seeing an OB-GYN every year is essential for women to ensure they maintain excellent health through every life stage. However, many parents don’t know when their daughters should start seeing this health care professional. Learn more about a young woman’s first visit to a gynecologist in the guide below.

When Should a Girl Have Her First Appointment at a Women’s Health Center?

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, girls should see an OB-GYN for the first time between the ages of 13 and 15 years old as they begin menstruation. This initial appointment and examination will differ from what grown women experience. A pelvic exam and a pap smear are not necessary until a woman reaches the age of 21.

What Should a Teen Expect From the First OB-GYN Visit?

IOB-GYNt’s natural for teenage girls to be nervous going into their first appointment at a women’s health clinic. OB-GYNs are accustomed to meeting with girls at this age and will offer a welcoming and judgment-free environment.

The bulk of the appointment will be educational: the doctor will ask a variety of questions regarding a teen’s menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and whether they understand their birth control options. If a teenager is sexually active, STI tests may be ordered. A general physical and an external genital exam will also be conducted. If desired, a parent can be in the room. While this first exam will not include a pelvic exam and pap smear, the gynecologist may discuss this process so girls understand what to expect moving forward.
