Insurance may be the last thing on your mind. In all reality though, now is the best time to start preparing for the worst and breaking out your insurance policies. Taking the time to evaluate your policy will help you prepare for the worse and avoid surprises when a claim occurs. Here are some common reasons why you may need to update your homeowners

1. Increase in Personal Property

Did you buy new appliances? Finally update your washer & dryer? You’ve spent your hard earned money on those BIG purchases, make sure their value is included in your personal property inventory.

2. Renovations

As the weather warms up, many people like to break out their tool kits and get started on housing upgrades and repairs. When you’re finished with your renovation, your coverage should go up. Make sure your home insurance policy is upgraded to reflect the new upgrades or additions to your home.

3.  Classification Changes

So you’ve moved out and are renting your home or decided to relocate but will visit your home for vacations or getaways? These small changes may mean big changes to your coverage. Failure to notify your agent of changes similar to those listed above may result in the denial of a claim or limited coverage on that claim.

Your insurance policy certainly won’t be the most riveting read, but taking a small amount of your time to review it and your coverage amounts could save you money and stress in the long run. And as always, never hesitate to contact your insurance agent with any questions or concerns you have.
