While you may want to leave the repairs to the professionals, there are a few monitoring tasks you should do between trips to the mechanic to ensure everything is running smoothly. During seasons like spring when the temperatures fluctuate frequently, you should check your tire pressure to ensure your new or used tires aren’t too over- or underinflated. Below are a few tips for the process.

4 Steps to Check Tire Pressure

1. Determine Optimum Inflation Level

You can’t set the correct tire pressure if you don’t know what it is, so your first step should be determining the ideal inflation level. This number, called the PSI, is typically located in your car owner’s manual as well as inside the door jamb of the driver’s side of the vehicle. If you’ve purchased used tires, the number should still apply. You’ll use this number range to compare with the readings on the pressure gauge.

2. Watch the End Caps

usedtiresNext, before you can insert the pressure gauge, you’ll need to remove the end caps on the air valves. Put them in a safe spot, such as your pocket, as these are necessary to prevent air leaks. Once you’ve finished filling the tires, screw the caps back in place immediately.

3. Check the Temperature

Because rubber expands when heated, you may not get an accurate reading if you check the tire pressure right after driving or when your car has been in the sun for several hours. Park it in the shade or your garage and wait for it to cool off before you proceed.

4. Insert the Gauge

Next, you’ll insert the tire gauge. If the number it produces is higher than your intended PSI, let some air out by pushing against the valve. If it needs air, you can use an air compressor at a local gas station to fill it, or take it to a mechanic for assistance. Check the PSI and adjust until the reading is within the recommended range.
