Used for both recreation and transportation, a snowmobile is a type of vehicle comparable to a motorcycle or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), but created specifically for snow and extreme weather. If you want to learn more about them, or are interested in getting one, here are a few things to know before you visit a snowmobile dealer near you.

How Snowmobiles Work

Shape

snowmobile dealerSnowmobiles are often described as motorized sleds or snow motorcycles. Like motorcycles, they are steered with handlebars, but have sled-like skis in place of wheels.

Much like a bicycle, the distance between the skis of a snowmobile give its stability, which you’ll hear snowmobile dealers refer to as “ski stance.” Despite their weight, these vehicles can tread over snow without sinking because of their wide, continuous track on the back, which creates a wide surface area that evenly distributes its weight.

Steering

Driving a snowmobile feels much like driving an ATV or motorcycle, so it shouldn’t take you long to feel comfortable steering one if you’ve ever driven either.

Like any other vehicle, there are many models of snowmobiles, each with their own unique capabilities. You can choose a lighter, trail-specific snowmobile designed for tight-cornering if you plan on sticking to trails, or a bulkier design made for extreme terrain if you like going off on your own. To decide which type is best for you, discuss your interests with your snowmobile dealer.
