granite countertop adds upscale beauty and class to kitchens and bathrooms, and you should care for this material to keep it in pristine condition. Granite is a porous stone, and if sealed improperly, it can discolor and become damaged. Resealing granite countertops ensures they remain clean, stain-free, and resilient for years to come.

A Guide to Resealing Granite Countertops

Resealing Annually

Generally, contractors and experts recommend homeowners reseal their granite countertops once a year. However, the frequency of your resealing depends on how often you use your countertops and the type of wear they withstand. If you use your countertops daily, they may need to be resealed twice a year or even seasonally. On the other hand, if you use a long-lasting sealant and don’t use your kitchen as often, you might not need to reseal annually.

Testing Your Sealant

granite countertopsTo determine how often you should reseal your granite countertops, test the sealant periodically by sprinkling several drops of water across the material. Let the water stand for about thirty minutes. When you come back, check the area to see if the stone absorbed the water. If it does, you’ll likely see spots of discoloration, indicating that it’s time to reseal.

Applying Sealant

When it’s time to reseal your countertops, give yourself at least 24 hours to complete the project. Pick a sealant that matches the granite’s color to enhance its beauty. Make sure you select a product that utilizes advanced chemical technology as these sealants last longer and are more effective at protecting the stone.

Before sealing, clean the surface with a stone cleaner that’s formulated for granite. Once it’s clean and dry, apply sealant in three- to five-foot sections. After application, work the formula into the stone by wiping it in a circular motion with a dry, lint-free cloth. Move on to the next section and repeat the process two to three times. Once you’re done, let the countertops dry for 24 hours before using them.
