Having your own pool is a joy when it’s nice outside. But when it’s the rainy season, many people put pool maintenance on the back burner—big mistake! Even if you’re not using your pool regularly, it still needs regular pool service

How Rain Affects Pool Water

Rainy weather can throw off a pool’s chemistry, but it’s not because of dilution. In fact, it’s almost impossible for it to rain enough to dilute the water of a residential pool.

The problems come from what sweeps in with the rains. When it rains, algae spores in the air and on the ground get washed into pools, which are perfect environments for algae to grow. Add in dirt and debris, and those algae spores now have plenty of organic material to eat. Once the clouds roll out, you’re left with murky pool water.

Furthermore, rainwater is slightly acidic. A prolonged rainfall can throw off the pH of the water in your pool, making it unsafe for people to swim in and letting algae and bacteria thrive.

Protecting Your Pool During the Rainy Season

Make sure your pool filter is in working order and run the pump for at least eight hours a day. Running the pump and filter circulates the water to deter algae growth and removes excess dirt and debris. Clean out your pool filter daily.

To kill live algae spores, shock your pool weekly with an added algaecide. Test the pH of your water regularly to make sure it’s at a safe level. Furthermore, clean and sanitize your pool as often as possible. Brush the walls, floor, and steps, and skim off leaves and debris daily.
