Whether you go out for drinks with coworkers or meet up with friends at happy hour, you’ll want to eat a nutritious meal first. Even just a couple cocktails or glasses of wine on an empty stomach can make you feel tipsy faster. Follow these do’s and don’ts about what to eat and drink before you go to a bar to avoid a hangover the next morning.

Do:

Eat plenty of protein.

Protein-packed foods help absorb the alcohol in your stomach and reduce its physical and mental effects. Before you go out, eat a light meat entree, such as grilled salmon or chicken, with a side of hydrating vegetables. You’ll feel more energized and alert while enjoying cocktails with friends.

Avoid salty foods.

Salty meals, including fried foods and pasta, will likely make you feel thirstier during happy hour, so you might end up drinking more alcohol in an effort to hydrate. Foods high in sodium also cause bloating and indigestion, which alcohol will only exacerbate.

Don’t:

Forget to hydrate.

happy hourOne of the best ways to prevent a hangover is by drinking plenty of water before heading out for happy hour. You should also drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage to prevent dehydration symptoms like nausea and dizziness.

Drink caffeine.

Even if you’re feeling tired before going to the bar, avoid having a cup of coffee or an energy drink. While caffeinated beverages will give a brief boost, that stimulation will make you think you’re more sober than you actually are, so you may end up drinking more than intended.
