While all flooring deals with staining agents, carpets are arguably the most susceptible to damage. Help yours stay in excellent condition by learning how to deal with the most common types of stains. If marks left behind by kids, food and drink, or pets are not eliminated through these methods, schedule carpet cleaning services.

Common Carpet Stains & What to Do About Them

1. Urine

carpet cleaningSoak up as much of the liquid as you can with paper towels before applying soapy water and white vinegar solutions. Then, squeeze some drops of liquid dish detergent into 1 cup of water; dip a towel into the solution, and blot the stain. Follow with a spray bottle solution of ½ cup of white vinegar and 1 quart of water to clean and disinfect. White vinegar is an excellent non-toxic disinfectant.

2. Blood

Use the liquid detergent solution to address blood stains. If the blood is too dry and you need more cleaning power, mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia in 1 cup of water to lift the stain. Stick with the detergent solution if the carpet features wool or wool-blend pile to avoid damage. For solution-dyed carpet such as polypropylene, use one part bleach to five parts water.

3. Crayon

Scrape off as much of the product as you can using a putty knife, then apply a few drops of dry cleaning spot treatment. Blot the cleaner with paper towels so it does not damage the carpet backing. Use the detergent solution if the cleaner does not fully lift the stain.

4. Ballpoint Pen Ink

Gently blot ink with a clean paper towel or rag dipped in non-acetone nail polish remover. If the stain persists, apply the detergent solution or use clear lacquer hairspray to soften the ink. Follow by blotting the stain with a clean, white cloth towel and repeat the process until the ink is gone. Do not scrub the ink, as this will work it further into the carpet. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove hairspray flakes.

5. Nail Polish

Apply non-acetone nail polish remover with a clean rag to remove the stain without harming carpet fibers. Change the rag as necessary so you are not wiping too much of the makeshift carpet cleaning product on the pile. Use a surface-safe adhesive remover if there is still nail polish left over.
