Fun in the sun should not be marred by dangerous rays that damage your skin. Whether you’re taking a catamaran tour or simply lounging on the beach, here are a few tips for applying sunscreen properly and shielding your body from UVA and UVB rays.

How to Guard Your Skin From the Sun

1. Apply & Reapply

Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading into the sunshine so your skin absorbs the protective components of the sunblock. Reapply every two hours. If you’re sweating or taking a dip in the water, reapply sunscreen immediately after, even if your sunscreen claims to be water-proof.

2. Choose the Right SPF

Start with a sunscreen of SPF 15, which will filter out about 93% of damaging rays. The higher you go, the more your skin is protected, which can make a big difference if you’re light-skinned or at risk for skin cancers and sensitivities. Also, choose a water-resistant variety that will shield you for longer while sweating or snorkeling on a catamaran tour.

3. Hit Every Area

toursMany people forget to cover certain spots, but neglecting them can result in damage to skin cells. Don’t forget to cover your entire neck and ears as well as the tops of your feet, even if you wear sandals. When helping a child, cover every inch of their exposed skin, especially for young kids and babies six months or older.

4. Use Enough

To get the most out of your application, use at least one ounce on your entire body. This ensures your skin absorbs a sufficient amount of the sunscreen to give you the full spectrum of the lotion’s protection.

5. Apply on Cloudy Days

UV radiation can still affect you even on an overcast day—you might even end up with a sunburn. If you are spending time outdoors, you need sunscreen no matter the weather.
