When building a new home, one of the features you need to plan for is your HVAC system. Your home heating system, air conditioning units, and any ducts will need space set aside--and the amount and locations of space you need will depend on the type of HVAC equipment you choose. Here's a quick overview of your options.

The Types of HVAC Equipment

1. Air Conditioners

The two main types of permanent air conditioners you should consider are central air conditioning and ductless mini-split systems. A central air conditioner uses one large unit to provide cold air to your entire home through a series of ducts. A mini-split system cools a single room or a small portion of the home, so you'll need multiple units, but the temperatures of different areas will be more customizable.

2. Heating

HVACHome heating systems can take a number of forms. Stoves are available which run on every type of fuel, from wood to electricity. These generally radiate heat but don't connect to your duct system, while a central furnace using gas, electricity, or heating oil can use your ductwork to move warm air through the home.

3. Combinations

A heat pump, or geothermal system, relies on the relatively stable temperature underground to regulate the temperature in your home. It can provide both heating and cooling to your house by reversing the direction in which it moves heat. This tends to be an energy efficient and eco-friendly option. There are also central HVAC systems that combine an air conditioner and a furnace in one unit.

The Sizing

The right size air conditioner or furnace for your home depends on its square footage, the effectiveness of its insulation, and a few other factors, such as how much sunlight the house gets and how often you cook or use hot water. An HVAC contractor can help you choose a system based on these factors. Too large of an AC or heating system, and your unit will constantly cycle on and off to maintain the temperature, wearing out the mechanisms. Too small, and the system will be under constant strain. The right size of equipment will last much longer without breaking, protecting your investment.
