Your garage door opener is a handy device that makes storing and accessing your vehicle quick and easy. But like all mechanical devices, it may malfunction eventually. As the opener nears the end of its service life, it will start to show signs that it’s time for a replacement or an upgrade.

How to Tell It’s Time for a New Garage Door Opener

1. Unusual Sounds

A chain drive garage door opener is noisy, and more so as it gets older. Consider a replacement when the noise level goes up or it sounds like the opener is struggling to manage the door's weight as it moves along the tracks. Electric motors that are about to give out also make loud or unusual sounds, so have a technician look at it.

2. No Motion

Replacement may be needed when the garage door remains closed after you push the remote opener. However, this could be due to something simple, like a dead battery—in which case, you’ll need to replace it. The door could also stop opening because of a broken circuit board, which often occurs after a power surge. To check, reset the garage door opener by unplugging the unit and waiting a few minutes to plug it back in. If that doesn’t work, your circuit board is likely fried, and you’ll need to install a new one.

3. Reversing Motion

A garage door that opens part of the way and then reverses is another sign that the opener has to be replaced. This problem usually happens due to a malfunction of the security sensors from damaged wiring. Rainwater from a leaky garage ceiling, or water from a sprinkler system or pressure washer can cause wire damage to the unit, short-circuiting its sensors. Check inside the unit to see if it is waterlogged. In some cases, the unit may start to work again after it dries out completely. Otherwise, you’ll have no choice but to replace it altogether.
