As the weather warms up, reliance on your oil furnace will diminish; however, even in early spring, there are cold days. 1. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

Because it’s designed to sift through the debris that flows through your HVAC system, the air filter get dirtier the more it’s used; if it’s clogged, it will impede the furnace’s performance. Since it’s used more frequently in winter, you should check on the filter once the season draws to a close. If you notice debris, replace it so that it’s ready for the next winter. 

2. Check for Issues

If there’s a part that can’t be fixed by repositioning, fastening, or cleaning it, leave it to a professional. Oil furnaces are complex appliances, and you don’t want to cause further issues, such as a full breakdown, accidentally.

3. Dust & Clean the Furnace, Registers & Grilles

As you clean the surfaces of your home, add the furnace system to your list. Dust, vacuum, and wipe down the registers and grilles covering the vents, as well as the unit itself. When cleaning an oil furnace, always turn it off and let it cool first; then, carefully unscrew the panel covering. If you know how to access the fan unit, use your vacuum’s brush attachment to clean any dust off thoroughly. Do the same with the fan blade; you may need to use a rag to clean it deeply. Once everything has been scrubbed, return the parts to the correct areas, re-attach the cover, and turn the power back on.
