The efforts you took to winterize your home last autumn protected your property throughout the cold months when you may have been away enjoying warmer weather. Now that spring has arrived, it’s time to prepare your home for better weather ahead. Follow the guide below to keep your plumbing in top-condition during the spring and summer.

How to Prepare Your Plumbing for Spring

Getting the System Ready

Winterizing is key to protecting your plumbing in the cold weather. You may have drained all the water from the pipes if you went away or insulated them so that the moisture would not freeze, expand, and burst the plumbing pipes. However, once you move back into your home, it’s important to de-winterize. You’ll need to ensure no damage occurred and get the system ready for use once again.

How It’s Done

plumbingDe-winterizing is a lot more complex than simply turning the water back on, which is why it’s best to have a professional help with this job. Doing it improperly could cause too much pressure, damaging your system. They will remove the aerators from all the faucets in the home. Then, they will open the shutoff valves for all the appliances that use water, turn off the power for the water heater and close its pressure release valve.

They will turn on an exterior hose faucet before slowly opening the main water valve. After opening it, they will check to make sure the water is flowing from the exterior faucet before turning it off. Next, they will turn all of the faucets inside the house on one by one, checking for leaks, flushing the lines, and replacing the aerators. Finally, they will turn on the toilet valves one by one and flush each of them several times.
