The sun's rays may have the power to give you the perfect golden tan. However, rays can significantly harm the skin, leading to everything from wrinkles and spots to skin cancer. Proper protection is essential to safeguard the skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Below are a few skin care tips that can offer a high degree of protection.

How to Protect Your Skin From Sun Damage

1. Wear Sunscreen

Much of the average person's exposure to the sun occurs during daily activities. If you’re going outside for more than 15 minutes, apply sunscreen beforehand. A solution with an SPF of 30 or higher is an ideal general starting point; if you have fairer skin or lighter hair, you may want to go higher. Some moisturizers and other skin care products come with SPF in them, so look for formulas that offer broad spectrum protection to simplify your routine.

2. Wear a Hat

skin careWear a hat with a two-to-three-inch brim around the entire perimeter. A wide brim can protect the delicate skin of the face, ears, and neck. For maximum effectiveness and comfort, choose a hat with a light color on top—as they reflect the sun's rays—and a dark color on the underside of the brim.

3. Visit a Dermatologist

Keep tabs on the condition of your skin and see a dermatologist if any unusual growths or discolorations appear. Lumps, blemishes, or moles that are growing or changing shape should always be promptly checked out by a medical professional. Also, certain prescription medications prescribed for depression, diabetes, and infections can make the skin more sensitive to sun damage, so you may need to severely restrict your time in the sun and always take proper safety precautions when exposed.
