Dentures offer a range of benefits, as they improve your smile, make eating food enjoyable, and prevent partial facial collapse. If you recently started wearing faux teeth, keep them in excellent condition for years by learning what care practices to follow and what you should avoid. Use these tips to prevent premature visits to your dentist for new dentures.

Do:

Rinse after eating.

Rinse your dentures of food particles following every meal. This prevents discoloration and bad breath because particles can combine with mouth bacteria to create unpleasant odors. Leftover food particles in the mouth can also contribute to gum disease so always drink plenty of water to rinse your mouth thoroughly.

Brush daily.

Brush the faux teeth every day using warm water, a denture-approved cleanser, and soft cleaning brush. Use a gentle motion to brush the teeth at a 45-degree angle just like you would with regular teeth. Brushing eliminates leftover food particles and bacteria for a healthier mouth.

Soak overnight.

denturesSoak your dentures every night using a specialized cleanser. Never sleep in them because they can cause mouth and gum sores, and encourage bacteria growth.

Don’t:

Use abrasive cleansers.

Avoid using abrasive cleansers not specially made for dentures to keep from scratching them. If necessary, ask your dentist for cleanser recommendations.

Pull on food while eating.

Do not use your dentures to pull or tug on food as you eat, such as pulling off a bite from a hard piece of bread, because they can fracture. Take small bites, so you don’t put too much pressure on your faux teeth.

Let them dry out.

Keep your dentures in water or a cleanser when you’re not using them. Dried-out faux teeth do not work because they cannot adhere to the gums effectively.
