Spring is the perfect time of year to tackle that long to-do list of things inside and outside the house. Fresh air deserves a fresh start. Include some landscape care in your spring cleaning plans—it will promote healthy lawn and garden growth throughout the spring and summer—the months when the body and mind crave the great outdoors. Use the checklist below to ensure you and your arborist don’t forget anything.

Gardening Guide for Spring

1. Clean up Winter Debris & Damage

Winter weather is tough on your yard. Now that the weather’s warming up, it’s time to clean up any debris and check for tree damage. Your trees might have dropped limbs, twigs, and leaves since the fall season. After this general cleanup, turn on your landscape lighting to check for any damage or wires that need to be reburied. Realign any lights that were knocked out of place during the winter.

2. Lay Down Mulch

Laying mulch down around your trees will help the roots get the moisture and nutrients they need while preventing weeds from taking root. Lay the mulch three inches deep all around the tree, but make sure it doesn’t touch the trunk.

3. Schedule Tree Trimming

The warmer weather and rains of spring will promote quick growth. Having an arborist prune the trees will encourage air flow between the branches and encourage thriving in the areas you want it. An experienced arborist will know how to locate any diseased or damaged branches and remove them so they don’t pose a hazard to the healthy parts of the tree.
