When you are hosting an outdoor event, ensuring you have the right amount of portable toilets and the required handicap access for guests is critical. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) offers guidelines on what you will need depending on the projected amount of attendees. Below are a few tips on keeping your next event ADA compliant.

What Are the ADA Requirements for Portable Restrooms?

Minimal Requirements

portable toiletAccording to the ADA, at least 5% of the restrooms at an event must be handicap accessible. This breaks down to about one accessible unit for every 20 toilets. For smaller events with less than 20 portable toilets, at least one must be a handicap unit. These units must have a width of at least 67 inches and a depth of 86.5 inches so that wheelchairs can easily maneuver into and within them. They must also be set at ground level so that ramps are not necessary.

Units must provide at least five feet of clear floor space to make wheelchair rotation obstruction-free. Handicap accessible portable toilets can also double as family restrooms, due to the increased space within the unit, which makes your event convenient for every guest in attendance. Be sure to check your area’s specific codes on portable bathrooms, as there may be additional requirements.

Necessary Features

There are additional necessary features besides extra space. Handicap portable toilets should be outfitted with grab bars and handrails to help with mobility restrictions. They must be anchored on a smooth surface between 34 to 38 inches off the floor.

Toilet seat heights should be between 17 to 19 inches above a non-slip floor. The flush lever must be on the open side of the toilet and set no higher than 44 inches. Motion-activated and touch-free devices are also recommended, specifically for hand dryers and soap dispensers in hand wash stations.
