When it comes to tree care, pruning is an essential task that helps the plant grow healthier. This is especially true with mango trees, which many residents on Oahu are fortunate to have in their backyards. Here are a few tree care tips that highlight why you should prune to ensure your mango tree remains healthy and blight-free.

3 Reasons to Prune Your Mango Tree

1. Control Size

Without proper pruning, a mango tree can grow up to 65 feet tall in some cases. This isn’t an acceptable height for most homes, which is why it’s recommended to prune late in the Winter or early in the Spring to help maintain a reasonable size. If you prune at these times, your tree won’t exceed 15 feet. For smaller trees, try pruning branches beginning at about three feet from the ground.

2. Creates a Stronger Mango Tree

Lateral branches entail a stronger framework for the tree, which means it’ll be able to hold the weight of the fruit once it grows. To create a stronger lateral framework of branches, prune above the location where you want the tree to branch when newly planted. As new growth crops up, keep pruning until there are four sturdy lateral branches to create a scaffold.

3. Stimulates Growth

Pruning removes deadwood while facilitating new growth. When the tree is young, focus on pruning the top to encourage new leaves to grow. An abundance of leaves produces more food for the tree, which provides more energy. This excess of energy and sustenance is highly beneficial as the tree beings to produce fruit.
