After a long winter, you’re likely looking forward to once again enjoying warm weather. For many people, this will include driving to state parks and other outdoor areas.  However, after winter, you may need to perform a few auto maintenance tasks to get your car ready and safe for spring. Here are a few that will keep your vehicle in top condition.

A Guide to Spring Auto Maintenance

1. Get a Brake Inspection

Have an auto mechanic inspect your braking system. They will examine everything from the disc brakes and drum brakes to your lines and hoses. Additionally, they’ll check the brake fluid and pedal. Heat friction is created each time the brakes are applied, and if any of these parts fail, your vehicle may not be able to stop, putting you in a dangerous situation.

2. Schedule an Oil Change

If the oil isn’t replaced in a timely manner, your engine can overheat due to its parts warping and grinding against each other. Eventually, your engine will fail completely, requiring a total replacement. To avoid this, schedule an oil change in early spring; the oil level likely depleted over the winter.

3. Remove Salt

Clean your car and remove residue left from driving on salted, snowy roads. To begin, pop your hood and remove any sticks or leaves by hand. Then, use a mixture of water and wheel soap to lightly brush your engine and any dirty crevices before rinsing with water. Next, move onto your wheels and rims and power wash the undercarriage. For the auto body, pre-rinse the vehicle before soaking it with a foam cleaner and scrubbing away grime and dirt with a microfiber mitt or towel. Rinse it with water and dry it. This process will protect your car from the damages salt can cause, including oxidation, dull plastic, dried rubber seals, or peeling paint.
