Winters have been harsh lately, and there are no signs of warmer winters in the future. You know to add an extra layer of clothing and to check the anti-freeze in your car. Now, add pipe winterizing to the priority list. A plumber may be needed to help with pipes hiding in the walls and floors, but here are some tips you can do yourself to help minimize your winterizing bills.

5 Easy Plumber’s Tips to Winterizing Your Pipes

1. Pipe Insulation

Insulation sleeves and foam pipe insulation are easy to add to your pipes. They wrap around the pipes to keep the cold out. Don’t allow gaps between the insulation; otherwise, freezing can occur. Heat tape and heating cables can also be used, but it is recommended that a plumber or electrician should perform the installation.

2.  Keep the Water Running

On those cold nights, it’s a good idea to keep the faucets and shower dripping. Moving water is harder to freeze. Daytime is not usually necessary since the water is turned and off throughout the day, but its better safe than sorry.

3. Open Cabinets

plumberOpening the cabinets under all the sinks allows air flow. The heat from the home helps to warm the pipes directly under the sink areas. This can particularly be useful in homes with full basements. The heat in the basement can keep most of the pipes warm.

4. Alternate Heat Sources

Crawl spaces under the home, basements, and attached garages are all possible pipe-freezing zones. If possible, use a space heater at night to warm these areas. If unsure, call a plumber to verify the most-likely freezing zones in your home.

5. Forbid Access

One way to stop the cold from freezing your pipes is to not let it in the house to begin with. Make sure windows — especially, in basements — are sealed tightly, and there are no cracks in the foundation. Plastic film insulation can be taped around the windows to prevent airflow, and caulk can seal up little cracks in the foundation.
