The prime spreading ground for fleas and ticks is a grassy lawn shared by other infested animals. Summer is the main reproductive season for these parasites, though prevention should continue year-round, especially if your pet comes indoors. Located in Highland Heights, KY, and serving all nearby cities, Robinwood Kennel provides a warm country feel for its pet daycare residents.

To help prevent the spread of fleas, Robinwood Kennel offers the following advice for eliminating and avoiding these obnoxious pests:

  • Spot Treatment: One of the safest and most effective conventional flea treatments is to apply a specialized formula on the back of your cat or dog's neck, and at the base of the tail for larger dogs. Spot treatments are available behind the counter of most pet stores or by prescription from a veterinarian. Follow all directions as marked. Ensure all spot treatments are at the base of the animal's fur, touching the skin, but out of reach of the mouth.
  • Flea Combs: You can comb fleas out of your pet daily with a fine-toothed flea comb. Empty fleas and eggs into a bowl of soapy water, and either flush them down the toilet or freeze them.
  • Lavender: As a natural flea repellent, apply a few drops of essential lavender oil to the back of your dog or cat's neck, and at the base of the tail for larger animals. Lavender oil doesn't kill fleas—it only repels them, so save this technique for after a thorough wash and dry or conventional treatment.
