Many people buy homes intending to update the decor, such as by replacing outdated carpeting with hardwood floors. However, for some lucky people, the current flooring materials may actually be hiding beautiful boards that just need a bit of refinishing to look like new. Here’s how you can tell what’s hidden underneath the surface.

What to Know About Hidden Hardwood Floors

What’s Underneath?

If your carpet is tacked down, it’s difficult to tell what’s underneath without harming the material. If you have a floor vent, remove it and gently push your fingers under the carpet to pull it up. If there isn’t a vent, pick a corner and use gloves and pliers to gently peel the carpet back. If neither of these is an option for you, consider the age of your home. If it was built more than 20 years ago, it’s more likely that you have hardwood flooring underneath your carpet than a newer home, and it’s worth calling a professional to investigate further.

What Kind Do You Have?

hardwood floorsIf you’ve confirmed there are hardwood floors under your carpet, the next step is to determine what kind of wood you have. Grain patterns can make different types of wood easier to identify, but when in doubt, use your fingernail. Go to a corner of the room and press down with your nail. If it’s soft wood, it should dent, and you can get floor sanding done to smooth it out later. If it doesn’t dent, it’s likely hardwood. If you’re still unsure, a flooring contractor can help you confirm with an in-home assessment.

How Do You Restore It?

A flooring contractor will need to come and rip the carpet out, revealing the bare hardwood floors underneath. From there, you will likely need floor refinishing and resurfacing. You can then choose if you want a stain to complete the look or leave it bare. Your contractor will help you decide what will be best for your current home design and decor.
