4 Steps to Remain Safe When Brakes Fail

1. Switch to a Lower Gear 

Because you can’t use the braking system, downshift to try to bring the car to a stop. If you have a manual gearbox, gradually shift from higher to lower gear settings in stages. If you have an automatic transmission, move your foot off of the accelerator to allow it to slowly downshift. 

2. Pull the Emergency Brake

Although downshifting will slow the car, engaging the emergency brake will help bring it to a complete stop. Whether you have to lift a hand lever or press a pedal, be patient, as the alternative brake doesn’t engage as quickly as the primary system. Resist the urge to apply more pressure, as moving too quickly could cause the wheels to lock up and make it difficult to steer the car to safety.  

3. Find a Place to Park

While making efforts to slow the car, you should also look for a place to park. Look for an area at the bottom of a slope. The natural incline could force the vehicle to stop. Rolling over rough pavement will also provide traction to slow the tires. Once you stop, keep the emergency brake set before putting the car in park and turning the engine off.     

4. Have the Car Towed to a Mechanic

After you pull over, turn on the hazard lights. This will alert other drivers to approach your vehicle with caution. The signals will also make it easier for a tow truck operator to find your location. They can take your car to an auto repair specialist for a complete braking system inspection. A mechanic can replace the pad and shoe, service the drum and rotor, and provide additional services to restore the quality and safety of your brakes.
