Who is required to have the CDL Physical Exam and the Medical Certificate?

Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles operating interstate if vehicle:

• Exceeds 10,000 lbs GVW
• Designed to transport 9-15 passengers including the driver, compensation is involved
• Designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, whether or not compensation is involved

Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles operating intrastate if vehicle:

Minnesota:

• Exceeds 10,000 lbs GVW operating as a private carrier in intrastate commerce
• Designed to transport 8 or more passengers including the driver, vehicle operating for hire in intrastate commerce
• Any vehicle transporting HazMat of a type or quantity that requires placarding

Wisconsin:

• Drivers of CMVs operating in intrastate commerce must meet the federal medical standards and present a valid federal medical card when the driver applies for a commercial driver license (CDL)
