Moving is stressful enough without the added fear of damaging your valuable possessions in transit. The good news is you can easily narrow down which items are most likely to suffer during the move and take additional precautions to protect them. Here are three that you should know before you start packing.

Which Items May Break During a Move?

1. Kitchenware

There’s nothing like confidently packing up your dishes and glasses only to discover them shattered upon arrival. The key is to package them appropriately so that there’s no chance of damage en route. Package all glass horizontally to prevent them from rolling against one another. Plates and glasses both should be methodically wrapped in thick sheets of paper and layered on crumpled paper to prevent jostling.

2. Artwork

Rochester, NY movingIf you have a lot of artwork at home, it’s worth taking the time to package each item with care and precision. If you have an original box for the work, use that and add sufficient packing paper at the top and bottom to prevent the piece from moving around. If the piece is made with glass, use plenty of stuffing—crumpled up paper is appropriate—to fill both the inside of the piece and any gaps in the box.

3. Stereo Equipment

It’s not unusual for delicate pieces of audio or stereo equipment to become damaged while moving, too. If you have the original box for your equipment, use that as it is sized just right for each piece. Otherwise, use boxes designed for dishes—they are sturdier than standard moving boxes and provide some additional protection. Tape each box thoroughly and fill the gaps with substantial paper to prevent anything from moving. Finish with bubble wrap to provide an extra protective cushion.
