While it’s normal to experience the occasional flickering light during inclement weather or when there’s a brownout, it’s not when you deal with it on a routine basis. In fact, it’s reason enough to contact an electrician if you notice an increase in flickering lights. Here are some reasons that may account for the problem.

Why You Have Flickering Lights

1. Loosely Screwed Bulbs

Sometimes the problem is as simple as an improperly screwed in light bulb. This is more likely if the problem is limited to a single light in one room. To test this theory, turn off the lights in the room. Wait until the bulb cools down, then screw it in tightly. When not properly screwed in, the bulb and socket aren’t in constant contact, which can lead to persistent flickering.

2. Changes in Voltage

If you notice the lights flicker only when you plug in and start using a particular appliance, it could be a result of that product drawing in more electricity than other fixtures. After the appliance stops, you may notice the lights continue to flicker or dim. While a little fluctuation is normal in most homes, it shouldn’t cause such dramatic issues with your lights. Have an electrician check the home’s voltage; it should fall somewhere between 110 and 120 volts.

3. Overwhelming the Circuits

Honolulu, HI electricianYou may have experienced a situation where too many appliances drew on a single outlet for electricity and caused your power to go out. The same problem may cause your lights to dim or flicker when you use a large appliance, like a washing machine. If the flicker is brief and minor, it’s nothing to worry about. But if it continues, it’s a sign that your home’s electrical service is juggling more current than it’s equipped to handle. Have an electrician install more outlets for you to space out your appliances’ energy usage.

4. Loosely Connected Parts

Flickering lights may be a sign of loose wiring; however, this isn’t something you can check yourself. Bring in a qualified electrician to examine the fixture’s wiring to determine whether replacements are necessary. If you live in an older property, it’s a good idea to have a home electrical repair technician inspect the wiring for signs of damage. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 57% of household fires between 2010 and 2014 were the result of electrical failure through wiring or lighting.
