A chain link fence makes an effective barrier and boundary marker, but it can be an unattractive property feature. Because of this, many people seek ways to beautify their fence, or at least disguise it so that it attracts less attention. Below are some tips to do that.

How to Disguise an Unattractive Chain Link Fence

1. Paint

An aluminum chain link fence is easy to paint. Choose an oil-based, exterior coating designed to adhere to aluminum. Before applying, rid the fence of dirt, grime, and grease with a power washer, and add a layer of primer. When selecting a color, choose green, brown, or charcoal if you want it to blend into the background. Do not attempt to paint vinyl-coated chain link; this requires the service of a professional painter.

2. Plants

Fence in Ellensburg, WAAnother effective way to mask the presence of an unattractive fence is to hide it with foliage. Situate a line of sunflowers or shrubberies along its perimeter or, better, plant fast growing vines in the ground and the base of the fence. The vines will interweave with the links as they grow, and soon you'll have an attractive, living wall.

3. Slats

Fence slats are two-inch wide strips of wood, vinyl, aluminum, or polyethylene that you weave between the links. They not only give the fence style, but they also provide privacy. As with paint, choose natural colors like green or brown to disguise it effectively. Decide which direction you want the slats to run—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Mix and match to create patterns.
