How to Prevent Pet-Related Plumbing Issues, Urbana, Ohio

If you’re a pet owner, you know how much joy animals can bring into your life. However, with all that joy usually comes plenty of messes. Between clogged drains and broken pipes, animals can damage your plumbing significantly. Below are a few ways owners can reduce damage.

5 Tips for Keeping Pets Away From Plumbing

1. Put the Toilet Seat Down

It may look funny to see a dog drinking out of the toilet bowl, but it’s unsanitary and causes diseases in some cases. Put the toilet seat and cover down after every use to avoid this.

2. Cover Exposed Pipes

Animals love to chew and claw at nearly anything they can get their paws on. If you have exposed pipes around your home, they could cause significant damage. Block off those areas by sealing them in cabinetry or setting up a baby gate around the area, so they can’t break pipes.

3. Use a Drain Cover

It’s important to bathe and groom your pets regularly, but all of that hair leads to clogged drains. Drain covers catch more hair than the average stopper, leading to less fur in the plumbing. Additionally, brushing or combing your pet before bath time can limit hair loss while shampooing.

plumber4. Put a Stop to Digging

You probably have some pipes running through your yard. Since dogs often love to dig, this could lead to major leaks. If you notice your pet digging, put a stop to it immediately. Additionally, try taking them on longer walks and exercise them more often to burn off their unused energy. If this doesn’t decrease digging tendencies, enroll in an obedience class.

5. Use Care When Flushing

Toilets are made to flush only natural waste and toilet paper. Kitty litter can jam up your pipes and create clogged drains. Use the trash instead.
