HVAC companies in the Lincoln, NE area are bound to receive phone calls throughout the the winter for issues that could possibly been resolved easily by first making a few checks of your heating and cooling system. Here is a list of those 5 things to check before calling a professional for furnace repair.

  1. Check the thermostat for power
  2. Check the thermostat’s operation and temperature settings
  3. Check and change the furnace filter
  4. Check to ensure the unit is kicking on
  5. Check the power switch and breaker

Check the Thermostat for Power

One of the easiest things to do is to check your thermostat to ensure it has power. The thermostat really is the brains of your system and if it isn’t on your system won’t know when to run. If your thermostat runs on batteries, check to make sure they are still good. If you do need to replacement make yourself a reminder on your phone or calendar to change them a year from now. If your thermostat is off and it’s powered by the furnace, pull the face off the base and make sure all the wires are connected.

Check the Thermostat’s Operation and Temperature Settings

This may seem elementary, but sometimes thermostat setting get change without your knowledge. So take a look to make sure that everything is correct. Make sure that your thermostat is set to Heat or Auto. From there check to see what the temperature setting is and/ or what your scheduled heat cycle is set to.

Check and Change the Furnace Filter

This is a simple task, but often forgot or overlooked. The furnace filter protects your furnace from dust and particles form accumulating inside the cabinet and important components, not to mention it also filters your home’s air. If left too long without changing the filter can become so dirty that it will begin to restrict the air flow within your HVAC system and could cause the heater to overheat and shut down or keep it from reaching your desired temp settings. If the filter looks looks dirty change it and and see if it makes a difference in your system’s performance.

Check to Ensure the Unit is Kicking On

Likely you going to know if your furnace is running, but some have a heat pump paired with either a electric or gas furnace. If your heat pump outside isn’t operating your furnace could be running while putting our room temperature air until the thermostat realizes the back up heat is needed. If you have a heat pump and notice cool air coming from the vents longer than usual it’s best to make a call to a professional to check out your heating system.

Check the Power Switch and Breaker

If you your system isn’t kicking on there are a couple quick things to check. Make sure that the power switch at he furnace is turned on. Also check to see that the break hasn’t been tripped. If the break is tripped there is likely some more to checkout and it best done by a trusted HVAC technician.
