Starting a discussion with your aging parents about transitioning to assisted living can be challenging. Though you may be hesitant to bring the subject up, some thoughtful planning can help you approach the topic more easily. The following tips will encourage a healthy dialogue between you and your parents about alternate living arrangements.

Do:

Start the conversation early.

The earlier you start talking to your parents about assisted living or alternative arrangements, the more time they will have to process this change. You want to avoid making decisions that feel rushed or like they were made under pressure. You should also be prepared to revisit the topic several times so your loved ones can ask questions, process their feelings, and figure out their finances.

Research assisted living options.

assisted livingPrior to initiating the discussion, explore different options. Find out the types of services and communities available and gain a better understanding of how much they cost so you can present this information to your parents. Focus on the benefits of how a safe and social setting will help them. Be ready to provide brochures and take them on tours if they’re interested.

Don’t:

Act as if a decision has already been made.

No one wants to feel like they are not in control of decisions that involve them. As such, you’re likely to get a more positive response if you include your parents in a dialogue instead of making an announcement. Make sure they have a voice in choosing where they live and the type of services they receive.

Neglect to provide reassurance.

Let your parents know you still intend to be a regular part of their life and that moving into an assisted living community won’t change that. Make it clear that this will give everyone the opportunity to enjoy one another’s company more. You’ll no longer have to spend time together working on household chores and addressing safety concerns.
