Your roof protects your home and belongings from the weather. When it develops a leak, you need to act quickly to prevent extensive water damage and to preserve the value of your property. But, not every leak shows up as a clear ceiling drip. Here are five other telltale signs you need roof leak repairs.

When to Schedule Roof Leak Repairs

1. Mold

Roof Leak RepairsMold spores are everywhere, but they can only sprout and grow when they have enough moisture. A very humid home may encourage mold growth, but it can also be a sign water is seeping through your shingles.

2. Sunlight in the Attic

During the day, go up to your attic or crawlspace. Turn off the lights and cover any windows. If you can see daylight through the shingles, water can also get through those holes. If there are a handful of holes, simple roof leak repairs will fix the problems, but if there are many, you may need a new roof.

3. Water Stains

When water gets into your wall and ceiling materials, it can often cause dark, yellowish, or brown stains as it dries. Check the location of any water stains; they could be due to either a pipe leak or a roof leak.

4. Damaged or Missing Shingles

Sometimes the need for roof repairs is visible from the ground. If you can see that shingles are curled, warped, separating, torn, or missing, they need to be replaced. You may also find granules from aging asphalt shingles in your gutter.

5. Flashing Damage

The joints where sections of your roof meet or where objects protrude through the roof are weak points where leaks often develop. You may need to get up on your roof or schedule an inspection from your roofing contractor to check the flashing in these areas.
