There is never a good time for your HVAC system to break down. Fortunately, you can prevent the need for air conditioning repair and keep the system running smoothly for years to come by performing some regular maintenance. Here are just a few tips for ensuring your family stays cool and comfortable all summer long.

3 Maintenance Tips to Prevent the Need for Air Conditioning Repair

1. Replace the Filters

As HVAC filters accumulate dirt, dust, hair, and other debris, the intake system has to work increasingly hard to circulate air. Over time, this can stress the system, until it eventually breaks down. Replacing filters every 90 days can prevent the need for air conditioning repair due to an overworked system. However, if you have kids, pets, or a busy household, the filters will need to be replaced more often.

2. Clean the Coils

It’s fairly easy to damage the coils if you don’t know what you’re doing, so call in professionals for this maintenance job. This will prevent inadvertent damage—and the need for even costlier air conditioning repairs.

3. Clear the Evaporator Drain

The evaporator drain tube is responsible for diverting condensation away from the unit. Since it can gradually become clogged with mold and algae, clearing it periodically is essential. If the system has a drain float, it will stop producing cool air until the drain is cleared. Otherwise, flooding will result when the drain is clogged.
