1. Brake

This fluid is responsible for ensuring your brakes’ function, so you need to see an auto repair shop for a top-up if it’s low. Several signs may indicate low levels, including leaking fluid, a vibrating sensation upon braking, a grinding noise, or even a burning smell. If it looks brown instead of yellow, you’ll need to replace it.

2. Power Steering

Power steering fluids won’t usually drop too much. When the level does fall, however, you may notice a whining sound when you turn the wheel. If something seems off when you operate the wheel, the fix could be as simple as refilling the fluid.

3. Engine

Check your engine oil monthly, and consult your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s oil change interval recommendation. You can easily check the oil level yourself by opening the hood, pulling up the dipstick, wiping it, then repeating this process.

4. Transmission

Transmission fluid is designed to protect the integrity of the car’s gears. You can check this in much the same way that you check engine oil, so long as the car is running while you do so. If it smells burnt or looks brown, you need to schedule a change.

5. Coolant

Your car won’t overheat so long as its coolant level is sufficient. When the car is off and cool, remove the radiator cap and look inside. If the fluid is low, you can simply refill it. Do this a couple of times a year to keep your car in shape.
