A wellhead most often is a visible component in your residential water well system. It’s designed to protect the well from pollutants that could contaminate your water supply. To ensure the quality of your drinking water, here are a few of the do’s and don’ts to follow that will help you maintain your wellhead.

Do:

Check the well cap and vent for damage.

Examine the well cap to ensure that it’s tightly sealed. Check the vent for any signs of cracks, holes, or discoloration. If you identify any rusted bolts, or damage these must be corrected to prevent water contamination. You should perform these visual inspections regularly.

Talk to neighbors about the water well.

Your neighbors may also have an impact on the health of your water well. Discuss any actions that could pollute the water supply. For instance, they should be careful when caring for their septic tanks as a sewage overflow could seep into your system.  Or if your neighbor has major landscaping work planned, such as altering the soil grade, make sure whatever changes they make won’t impact the flow of runoff near your well.

Don’t:

Store oils or chemicals near the wellhead.

water wellNever keep fertilizers, motor oil, or other household chemicals within the area of your wellhead protection area. They should also be stored at a distance of at least 100 feet and in a safe location, such as a gardening shed or garage. Use nontoxic supplies in your landscaping whenever possible. If you have pets or keep animals, make sure their kennels or pens are also kept far from your well system.

Forget to install a noncorrodible vent screen.

Purchase a noncorrodible screen for your wellhead vent. It’s designed to keep out insects and rodents, as these pests carry diseases that could pollute your water well supply. Check it periodically to make sure it’s still intact and isn’t clogged with debris.
