If you’ve never belonged to a health club before, going to the gym might feel very intimidating at first. You may feel overwhelmed with choices, unsure how to operate the equipment, or self-conscious about your fitness level (or lack thereof). Here are a few tips to help you conquer “gymtimidation.”

How to Feel More Comfortable at the Gym

1. Work With a Trainer

To get started on your fitness journey, meet with an experienced personal trainer to discuss your goals. Whether you want to focus on losing weight, gaining strength, or improving your cardiovascular health, a trainer can help you narrow down which machines and classes will help you achieve your objectives. With the trainer’s help, you can learn how to use the health club equipment safely and effectively, so you’ll feel more confident and be able to get the most benefit from your gym membership.

Group exercise classes are a great way to overcome your self-consciousness, relax, and have fun while you get in shape. Check the class schedule at your health club for functional training or yoga classes for beginners, and sign up before you have a chance to change your mind. In a group training class, you can learn from not only the instructor but also your fellow students, and you’ll soon realize everyone takes a class for their own reasons and no one is there to judge you.

3. Ease Into It

If the idea of a personal trainer or a group training class still hasn’t convinced you to face your fear of the gym, find other ways to add more physical activity to your life in the meantime. As your fitness level increases and you gain confidence in your physical abilities, you’ll feel ready to tackle new exercise challenges and be able to face the gym without intimidation.
