If you’re looking for that Hollywood-bright smile, professional teeth whitening is an excellent choice. Your dentist can help you get results, but people with sensitive teeth and gums may find that teeth whitening affects their smiles. Here’s how, why, and what you can do about it.

How Does Teeth Whitening Affect Tooth & Gum Sensitivity?

teeth whiteningTeeth whitening can be done at home or in your dentist’s office, and each can cause sensitivity—at least temporarily. At home, you use a lower-strength peroxide solution then is available at the dentist; but, the at-home application can be messier, allowing peroxide to burn your gums. A dentist uses a stronger solution for brighter results, but the professional application will keep the solution on your teeth, minimizing gum sensitivity.

Whatever teething whitening option you choose, the sensitivity that follows is often temporary, lasting a few days after each treatment. Overuse of bleach-based whitening products can also cause longer-term sensitivity, so talk to your dentist about the frequency of your whitening treatments.

Can Toothpaste Help?

Toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth can help relieve everyday sensitivity as well as any associated with teeth whitening treatments. Some brands even offer varieties that whiten and protect the teeth from sensitivity. There are also prescription toothpaste products for persistent sensitivity that’s doesn’t respond to over-the-counter options.

You should also brush gently using a soft-bristled brush twice a day, and floss daily to strengthen gums and prevent inflammation that contributes to sensitivity. Citrus fruits and sugary sodas wear away at the protective enamel on your teeth, which can also increase discomfort, so consume these foods on a limited basis and brush or rinse your mouth out after.
