Hardwood floors are popular in U.S. homes because they’re attractive, durable, and easy to care for. But just because they’re low-maintenance doesn’t mean they’re indestructible. In fact, most homeowners cause damage to their hardwood floors without even realizing it. To keep yours in good condition, avoid the following hazards.

What’s Damaging My Hardwood Floors?

1. Over-Cleaning

While most hardwood floors are treated to withstand some wet cleaning, exposure to liquid and moisture should be limited. Dust and sweep daily, but only wet clean your floors every four to six weeks. Use a damp (not drenched!) cloth or mop, along with a small amount of wood cleaner mixed in water.

2. No Welcome Mat

A welcome mat does more than greet your guests—it also acts as a buffer between your hardwood floors and the dirty outdoors. Get in the habit of wiping your feet as soon as you enter your home to remove grit and grime from the bottom of your shoes. This will not only keep your floors clean but also protect them from being scratched by dragged-in dirt and debris.

3. High Heel Shoes

When wearing a high heel shoe, your body weight pushes the pointy end into the floor, causing dents, scratches, and scrapes. To remind you to slip out of your heels as soon as you get home, keep a pair of soft slippers by your front door.

4. Rough Rug Pads

You need pads to keep your area rugs from slipping and sliding, but it’s important to use the right kind. Plastic rug pads can dull your floor’s shine, as well as leave stains and cause discoloration. Look for pads made of natural rubber or felt, which will keep your rugs anchored without affecting the floor.

5. Untrimmed Pet Nails

Your furry friends come with sharp claws that can scrape hardwood floors and destroy their finish. Be diligent about trimming your pet’s nails, and consider runners or carpet installation in high-traffic pet areas such as hallways and living rooms.
