Prayer plays a significant role in religion. As you begin to introduce your children to church, you’ll have to teach the basics of prayer. This can be a complicated topic for many young ones to grasp, but by following the tips below, you can help them to understand this cornerstone of faith.

Do:

Lead by example.

Prayer is a personal experience. However, in the beginning, it’s helpful to provide examples for your children. Therefore, practice with them every day. Have them watch you, both at home and at church. Seeing the sense of peace created by the ritual will naturally make them want to take part in it as well.

Be supportive & patient.

church Learning the tenets of one’s faith is a lifelong pursuit. Encourage their questions, both about religion and about prayer, and remind them to continue these conversations with God as well. Over time, they’ll develop their own unique understanding of prayer.

Don’t:

Make matters too complicated.

Learning traditional religious prayers and language takes time. Start with age-appropriate verses or ask your child to simply say what they are grateful for. You can even prompt them with questions, by asking them how they feel about certain joys in their life or if they have any hopes for a loved one. Additionally, consider enrolling them in Sunday school or other church programs so that they can continue their religious study.

Make prayer a chore.

Prayer should never feel like a burden. Gently remind them if they forgot to thank God before bed, but don’t push the issue. They’ll be more willing to adopt the practice when it isn’t forced.
