Baptism is a joyful ritual that recognizes a person’s relationship with Christ, but it’s not a decision to made lightly. Many children might not understand the significance of the choice, and it’s important for parents to discern whether their children are only following the crowd at church or requesting baptism because they understand the meaning of it. For that reason, look for these signs before agreeing to your child's request to be baptized.

3 Signs It’s Time to Baptize Your Child

1. They Understand the Significance

Baptism is the public process of declaring one’s belief in and devotion to Christ, and many churches strongly encourage parents not to have their children baptized as infants for that reason. Christianity is a personal choice that should be made by each person. The Bible also teaches that baptism isn’t necessary for salvation. If your child is mature enough to articulate their understanding of this core belief but still chooses to be baptized, they should be allowed to proceed.

2. They Show Signs of the Holy Spirit

churchPeople of all ages and faiths can do good deeds, but those who have faith in Christ exhibit more natural Christ-like tendencies in their actions. Believers feel this is because the Holy Spirit is alive in them. Children should show a love for God and the Bible, repentance for their sins, and the conviction of their beliefs.

3. They’re Willing to Wait But Don’t Want To

Many churches prefer that only adults participate because it’s a public profession of one's faith. If your child shows patience and conviction when urged to learn and grow before being baptized, it’s a good sign they will be ready for the affirmation at a later date. If they insist on completing baptism now, respect their wishes and consult with your pastor.
